This new indoor/ outdoor living space sits atop an existing, three-story San Francisco flat. The owners wanted an entertainment space that could take advantage of amazing Bay Area views while acknowledging the frequent, less than friendly local weather conditions. Lejarraga Studio designed the penthouse and rooftop terrace to be almost completely transparent while providing protection from the wind with wind screens and glass walls.
The interior space is small, but designed to make 160 square feet feel more like 300. It's enormous sliding glass doors open in two directions; continuous tile flooring further connects inner and outer. Designed to float (the structure doesn't need a corner post), the room extends as far as the canopy. The glassed-in space features a kitchenette and can be used year round. The terrace's hot tub and bbq enhance entertainment possibilities.
